Peleg Mumford, second son of Sarah (Sherman) (1636-c1692) and Thomas Mumford (c1623-1692) was born in 1659, just a few years prior to the time the land in the Atherton purchase (North Kingstown) was available available for settlement.
According to the same records, "Peleg, of Thomas and Sarah, married Sarah Hull of Conanicut" (now Jamestown, Rhode Island, USA) in March 1692. She was probably the daughter of John Hull of Boston, Massachusetts, to whom Peleg's father wrote on May 14, 1666, regarding a proposed meeting in connection with the Pettacomscutt Purchase. John, whose wife was Damaris, was son of Rev. Josiah Hull, (b: 1595 Northleigh, Devonshire, England) who, with his wife, immigrated to America, May 5, 1635, sailing from Dorset, in the previous March, and settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts, later removing to Jamestown.
1686-11-30: On 30 November in 1686 a land deed transferring "ye land now in Possession of Bethia Palmer, Widow and Relict of George Palmer, late Deceased." [1] into the possession of an investment company composed of Thomas Mumford, Peleg Mumford, John Sheldon, and Samuel Meade, was recorded in the Fones record. This company of investors were authorized to erect a grist and fulling mill at this location along the "Mattatuxett River," in North Kingstown. Map evidence suggests the property was sited at what is presently called the Shady Lea Mill due west of present day Plum Beach, Rhode Island.
1687-09-06: Taxed 8s. 4d. On 6 September 1687, Peleg Mumford is cited on Gov. Andros' tax roll at Rochester (renamed later to Kingstown), Rhode Island owing a “pole” (poll) tax of 1s, and a property tax of 2s 1d, which places him as an adult resident and property landholder in Kingstown, RI on this date. [2] This tax roll identifies a sum total of 136 heads of house living in the roughly 22.5 square mile area associated with Kingstown, RI on this date in 1687; one consequence of this sparse population is that he would have been well acquainted with many, if not all, of the individuals identified on this list. Therefore, this tax list is a defacto definition of the people who were available to be his friends, neighbors, and allies; it would be essential to cultivate strong working relationships with these neighbors in order to survive on this frontier landscape. This cross reference tool provides hot links to peruse most of the 136 Wikitree families identified in this tax roll; families who were very frequently interconnected, or became interconnected, by marriage, over the course of their lives and throughout the ensuing generations, further binding a network of neighbors into extended families. [3]
Peleg died 8 July, 1745 in South Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island. [4]
