Biography

"Johan Storm Munch (born 1778 in Vågå, died 1832) was a Norwegian writer and bishop in Kristiansand. He published the poem collection Fjeldblomster in 1813, and published the journal Saga between 1816 and 1820. In 1823 he was appointed bishop of Christiansand diocese."[1]

"J. St. Munch was," says Henrik Jæger in his literary history, "the first Norwegian poet whose love for the saga was more than platonic, and he is at the same time the first whose poetry was inspired by recent German and Danish literature. [...] Despite his selflessness, Munch is the most interesting writer personality of the period, just as he is by far the one of the writers of the period who possessed the greatest talent as a lyricist. But he has not been sufficiently noticed. In our literary histories he has dealt with a few and not always very apt words."[1]

Johan was born 31 August 1778 at Vågå, Oppland, Norway, the son of Peter Munch and Christine Storm. He was baptized 6 September 1778 at he Vågå Church.[2]

He married Else Petronelle Hofgaard 9 March 1810 at Akser, Norway.[3] They were the parents of nine children: Mathilde Abigael; Andreas ; Hermann; Peter Kristian; Edvard Johan; Caroline Johanne; Henrietta Mathilde; Søren; and Johan Storm.

"He was the father of Andreas Munch (1811-1884), the foremost Norwegian poet of his period. Another of his sons, Johan Storm Munch (1827-1908), was a priest and central to the formation of the Free Church. This one again had a son of the same name who was an architect."[1]

He died 26 Jan 1832 at Kristiansand, Vest-Agder, at the age of 53. His remains were buried at the Kristiansand Church graveyard 2 February 1832.[4]
