Biography

Her date of birth is not known in source material but could be presumed to be about 1555 and at the family holdings in Assynt, Sutherland. She is stated to be the daughter of Hugh Munro of Assint, brother of Robert Munro, Lord of Fowlis.[1][2]

She married, likely about 1575, Donald Balloch Mackay, the first born but declared illegitimate, son of Iye Mackay and his cousin Helen Macleod, daughter of Hugh Macleod of Assynt, the same property which was held co-jointly with the Munro.

They had a number of children:

  • Hugh Mackay. Will venture to the United Netherlands in command of "the Mackay men" and will inherit as 2nd Lord Scourie.
  • William Mackay.
  • Margaret Mackay. She married Alexander Sutherland of Kilphedder, great-grandson of Alexander, the heir of Sutherland.
  • Janet Mackay. She married William Mackay of Carnachy.
  • Christian Mackay. She married Murdoch Mackay of Achness.
  • Ann Mackay. She married John Tarrel of Strathfleet.

She must have died around 1590, presumably at the estate at Scourie, Sutherland.
