Account of estate of JAMES MURPHREY by John PINNELL in right of his wife Rebekah MURPHEY. Covers 1797-1799. MURPHEY had died intestate. Persons mentioned: Unity MURPHREY(a distribute of James MURPHEY's estate), James COGGIN(whose wife Levina was one of the distributes of the estate), Levina MURPHEY(before here marriage to James COGGIN), Wm. WEBB, Thos. LANIER. Examined March Court, 1801 by Jas. SEAWELL, Will. JONES.
James died without leaving a will. His widow married John Pinnell who became guardian of the estate. At the time of his death his two daughters Unity and Levina were old enough to be mentioned in the estate proceedings, while his sons James and Sion were still minors, and therefore not mentioned in this record.
In a book of Bute Co. Land Plats 1773-1778 it shows:
p 155 #1096, p159, John Smart and wife, Sarah Smart, of Franklin Co. to William Leonard of same, April 16, 1791, for 100 pounds a 257 acre plantation lying on the south bank of Sandy Creek and on the Bever Dam branch adjoining Collins, James Murphey and Arthur Murphey, which land was granted to said Smart by a deed baring date Oct. 25, 1753. Witness Jas. Carlile, James MURPHEY, Frederick Leonard.
p 170 #1192, p17, Peter Smart and wife, Sarah Smart, of Franklin Co. to James MURPHREY of same, April 16, 1791, for 20 pounds. VA money a 20 acre plantation lying on south side of Sandy Creek adjoining said James MURPHREY and Arthur MURPHREY formerly granted to said Smart by patent bearing date Oct. 25, 1753,"which is John Wood's original deed."; Wit: James Carlile, Wm. Lenard, Frederick Lenard. Note: Bute Co. was divided and part of it became part of Franklin Co.
