As with his brother, Peter, he had a good education and as an educated man took the surname Sjölin while still living in Sweden, changing the spelling to Shaleen (sometimes Shulin early on) in the United States, where the family arrived in 1855.[1] He, his brother, his two sisters, a brother-in-law, an infant nephew and both his parents came together to the USA in 1855 and settled in Chisago County, Minnesota Territory.
In 1862 he volunteered for the 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry and served until August 1865 in Company I, promoted to corporal.[2]
He served two terms in the Minnesota State Senate from 1876 – 1883. He also served Chisago County as probate judge and as sheriff.[3]
He died in 1901.
