Julian was born on 13 December 1909 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was the son of John Nagel and Rose Pope. After his parents divorced, he and his mother moved to San Diego, California.[1] They eventually moved back to Santa Fe. Julian graduated from Santa Fe High School on 3 June 1927.[2]
He married Arline Bordner, but the marriage did not last; in January 1937, she sued for divorce on grounds of abandonment and non-support.[3]
He enlisted in the United States Army on 14 January 1942.[4] He served in the Eighth Air Force. He was wounded in action on 4 February 1943.[5] He was ball-turret gunner on the Flying Fortress "Patches," also known as "Cunningham's Coffin." He was on twenty-eight missions and was credited with having downed at least five Nazi planes. He participated in the bombing of Kiel, Wilhelmshaven, Vegesack, St. Nazaire, Lorient, and the Low Countries.[6] He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross,[7][8][9] Air Medal,[10][11] and three Oak Leaf clusters added to the Air Medal.[12] In January 1944, he went to Fort Myers, Florida to serve as an instructor in gunnery.[13] He was discharged on 9 October 1945.[14]
On 29 September 1951, the Royal Arch degree of York Rite Masonry was conferred on him.[16]
He worked as a draftsman for the New Mexico State Highway Department.[17][18][19] He received an award for twenty years of service on 16 December 1958.[20] He retired in 1965 and received an award of merit.[21]
Julian and his wife Ruth provided Ruby's Home for Senior Citizens with a Christmas turkey every year.[22]
