Woodrow Wilson Nance enlisted in the regular Army, as a Pvt., in June, 1937. In Dec, 1938 he was serving, as a Pvt., with Headquarters Company, 23rd Infantry, Ft. Sam Houston, TX. In Nov, 1939 he was still serving with HQ, 23rd Inf Div at Ft Sam Houston, TX as a PFC. In 1941 he was promoted to Sgt. In Sep, 1941 he was sent to Officers Candidate School at Ft Benning, GA and graduated with the rank of 2nd Lt. He sailed, from Ft Dix, NJ, for service in the European Theater, on Apr 1, 1942. In Aug, 1942 he participated in the Dieppe, France commando raid by British, Canadian and Australian units as an American Observer/Intelligence Officer. He was wounded in that action and subsequently received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for gallantry. He was promoted to 1st Lt. On 08 November 1942 he landed with Allied troops in Morroco during Operation Torch in North Africa, and was killed in action during the Battle of Kasserine Pass on 03 Feb, 1943 and received another Purple Heart, posthumously. He is buried in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial near Carthage, Tunisia, North Africa. [NOTE: There is a Memorial Marker in the Center Cemetery, near Lometa, Lampasas County, Texas. Marker inscription: "Nance, Woodrow, June 1, 1918 - Feb. 3, 1943, Lost in Action 1Lt Army WWII"]
