Dad didn't want to follow his brothers down pit so in 1933 he joined the KOYLI for 7 years but Mr Hitler's intervention did not allow him to leave in 1940 so he went with first Battalion as a signals operator. He served in North Africa then did the Sicily and Italian landings He spent Christmas 1944 outside Monte Caminho down river from Cassino. After they got past that roadblock He carried on up Italy until just outside Rome he caught malaria. After hospitalization, he went up to Treviso where he was engaged in questioning Italian POWs. He was demobbed in 1946. He worked at various jobs until he was diagnosed with cancer in 1983. He survived until 1986 before he finally gave up.
