Rudolph Neff was born in Switzerland on September 26, 1727. [1]

He emigrated to Pennsylvania along with his younger brothers around 1750, where they stayed at the house of a "Widow Morse." Rudolph would marry the widow's daughter Hannah Morse at the Market Square Church in Germantown on January 6, 1752.[1]

Before marrying, Rudolph purchased a brick house in Frankford for himself and his bride. He "later dealt extensively in real estate in and about his adopted country" according to Jordan.[1]

Rudolph and Hannah had seven children: [1]

  • Elizabeth: Nov. 8, 1752 - Jun. 6, 1829, married, Mar. 15, 1773, Adam Baker;[2]
  • Barbara: Feb. 2, 1754 - Unknown, married, Jul. 18, 1779, Adam Sticker;[3]
  • Hannah: May 6, 1759, married Philip Buckius.[4]
  • Mary: Jan. 26, 1762 - Jan. 26, 1842, married John H. Worrell.[5]
  • Peter: Feb. 15, 1764 - Aug. 14, 1804, married, Mar. 4, 1784, Rebecca Scout.[6]
  • Johannes: Sep. 22, 1766 - Jul. 6, 1767[7]
  • Samuel: Jun. 27, 1768/1769 - Jul. 4, 1839, married, Feb. 3, 1787, Eleanor Helveston.[8]

He died February 14, 1809 and was buried with Hannah in the graveyard of Frankford Presbyterian Church. [9]

Research Notes

Relevant excepts from Jordan found on Find a Grave - unable to find online version or page numbers:

"Rudolph Neff, the elder of the emigrant brothers, born in Switzerland, September 26, 1727, married at the Market Square Church, Germantown January 6, 1752, Hannah Morse, daughter of Widow Morse, a Quakeress at whose house the Neff brothers lodged on first coming to Frankford."[11]
"Rudolph Neff purchased, prior to his marriage, a brick house in Frankford in which he resided. He later dealt extensively in real estate in and about of his adopted country and was captain of a company in the Philadelphia Battalion of the Flying Camp commanded by Colonel Robert Lewis, the first body of Pennsylvania militia sent to support of Washington's army about New York in 1776. Whether he rendered later service in the Revolutionary struggle after the disbandment of the Flying Camp, does not appear the rolls of Philadelphia militia being very incomplete and fragmentary."[12]
