Early Life

Ed, son of Swedish immigrant parents Magnus Nelson (b. 2 Feb 1865) and Anna Carolina Svenson (b. 17 Aug 1869), was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1895.[1] He had two siblings, Margaret Elisabeth Nelson (b. 17 Jul 1986) and Arnold Nelson (1903-). The family made their home for a time in Sidney Township in Montcalm County, where his father took up farming.[2]

Military Service

Edward Nelson served in the United States Army in World War I
Service started: 3 Aug 1917
Unit(s): 337th Ambulance Company
Service ended: 12 July 1919

Edward registered for the draft when he was 22, and listed his occupation as being in charge of the stock room at Packard Motor Company. His draft card described him as a tall man with a medium build, black hair and grey eyes.[3] He enlisted on August 3, 1917.[4] He deployed to France and served as a Wagoner in Ambulance Company 337. He was discharged after the war and sailed from Brest, France on June 30, 1919 aboard the Pretoria. He arrived into Hoboken, New Jersey on July 12.[5]

Family

After the war, Ed returned to Detroit. He married Mildred (Messner) Nelson in Detroit on August 7, 1926.[6] At the time, he listed his occupation as "laboratory work." Ed and Mildred moved in with Ed's father, then a widower.[7] Ed took clerical work at an auto factory, and their son was born in 1931. Ed kept the job at the auto plant through 1940.[8]

He passed away in October of 1959, three days before his 64th birthday.
