George Nesbitt was born 1844 son of Robert Nesbitt and Ruth Ann LaBarr
In May 1878 at Big Camas Prairie, Idaho he was shot through the mouth by an Indian at the beginning of the Bannock War[1]
George Nesbitt was the first white man to be wounded in the Bannock Indian War as recorded in Hailey’s History of Idaho. [2] The Bannock War of 1878 was an armed conflict between the U.S. military and Bannock and Paiute warriors in Southern Idaho and Northern Nevada, lasting from June to August 1878. The Bannock-Paiute totaled about 500 warriors; they were led by Chief Buffalo Horn who was killed in action in June. The U.S. military, consisting of the 21st Infantry Regiment and volunteers, was led by Brigadier General Oliver Howard. Nearby states also sent militias to the region. The conflict ended in August and September 1878, when the remaining scattered Bannock-Paiute forces surrendered; many returned to the Fort Hall Reservation.
He married 30 Aug 1887 to widow Minnie Stuart Powers 1862-1919 Minnie Stuart Nesbitt formerly of Boise who died in 1919. George and Minnie were pioneers of Idaho, he still resides in Boise.[2] Find A Grave: Memorial #13365322
In the 1900 United States Federal Census George Nesbitt (age 43), Farmer, was the married head of household in White Cross, Ada, Idaho.[3]
In the 1910 United States Federal Census George Nesbitt (age 69), Farmer, was the married head of household in South Boise, Ada, Idaho, United States.[4]
In the 1920 United States Federal Census George Nesbitt (age 73), Farmer, was the widowed head of household in Boise, Ada, Idaho.[5]
He was buried 25 May 1931 inscription reads, "George Nesbitt 1844-1931 on a memorial in Morris Hill Cemetery, Boise, Ada County, Idaho, United States with a death date of May 1931.[6]
