Truman Handy Newberry was a prominent American businessman and politician. After serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, he served as Secretary of the Navy between 1908 and 1909. From 1919 through 1922, he served as a Republican United States Senator from Michigan. He was forced to resign due to election irregularities.

Truman Handy Newberry was born on 5 Nov 1864 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, son of John Stoughton Newberry (~1826 - 1887) and Helen Parmelee Newberry (~1836 - 1912).

He joined the US Navy as a lieutenant (junior grade) in May 1898 and served on the USS Yosemite during the Spanish–American War. On June 6, 1917, he was promoted to lieutenant commander in the United States Navy Fleet Reserve, and from January 9, 1919, he served as assistant to the commandant of the Third Naval District, based in New York City.

In the 1880 census Truman (age 15), At School, was the single son of John S. Newberry in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States.[2]

He married Harriet Josephine Barnes. They had a son Phelps Newberry.

Truman died on 3 Oct 1945 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan aged 80. [3] He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit.[4]
