OBITUARY.[2]
The death occurred at the David Berry Hospital on Thursday morning, of Thomas Henry Newing, a well-known and highly respected resident of Berry at the age of 75 years. A fortnight ago he was admitted to hospital and on Friday last a leg was amputated in an effort to save his life. Although the operation was a success, his heart failed and he collapsed and died suddenly.
Born at Kiama, the late Mr. Newing had a most interesting and useful life. At the age of 19 he fought in the Sudan War (rising to the rank of Sergeant) and when he came back to Australia, he joined the Police Force. After twelve years in the Force he had trouble with his legs and he was forced to retire from the service. He then decided to go on the land and some 25 years ago took over a dairy farm a couple of miles out of Berry, where he successfully carried on until his retirement when he moved into the town. As a youth, he assisted his father to erect many of the stone fences that stand to-day around the Kiama district, as a monument to their work. The late Mr. Newing was a man of fine physique and apart from the trouble with his legs, he never had a sickness that forced him to seek medical advice.
His wife predeceased him four years ago and he is survived by the following sons and daughters, Reginald (Wollongong), Roy (Pyree), May (Mrs. Lee, Bel more), Gladys (Mrs. Oke, Pyree), Ruby (Mrs. A. Wood, Punchbowl) and Miss Lily Newing, of Berry, to whom is extended the heartfelt sympathy of all sections of the community. Mrs. W. Cook, of Eddy Street, Kiama, is also a sister, and to her sympathy is also extended. The funeral took place yesterday (Friday) for the Berry Cemetery.
