Elizabeth Newman. [1]
Alias: Matilda.
Note: #N7.
File @M26@. @M83@.
Note N7It is an open question whether the wife of Zachariah Summers should be known by the name Matilda Newman or Elizabeth Newman. I am going out on a limb by assuming that Elizabeth and Matilda are one and the same, and combining the names for the wife of Zachariah Summers. The name is given as Matilda in the Centennial History of Baxter County (Arkansas) by Mary Ann Messick, reporting information given to her by Zelma Summers, the daughter of Dr. James Lawrence Summers, who she said was the 10th child of Zachariah and Matilda. We do not know where Aunt Zelma got the information, but I am going on the hunch that the story, provided with this much detail, contains some of the truth. It may be that Aunt Zelma simply misremembered her grandmother's name, or that it is a correct memory of a middle name or nickname. However, all the census data for Zachariah Summers in and around the reported location of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County, Tennessee, shows his wife's name as Elizabeth. And there is a marriage license and record of the marriage of Zachariah and Elizabeth on August 14, 1842 in Rutherford county. Images of the license and marriage record are in the marriage scrapbook.
