Biography

George Edwards was born in Haverhill, New Hampshire, about 1845, the son of Jonathan and Myra (Montgomery) Nichols. (His birthdate of August 18, 1845, is based on his age at the time of his death - 59 years, 9 months and 20 days). He grew up in Haverhill, where his father was a wheelwright.[1]

He attended the Kimball Union Academy in Plainfield, New Hampshire, between 1862 and 1863, and when on to attend Dartmouth College 1863-64. During the Civil War, he served in the United States Navy, 1864-1865, as a paymaster clark. After the war, he took a few years to travel and study, and then settled down to work as a bookkeeper in Boston, Nantucket, Fairhaven and Webster, Massachusetts. [2]

In 1877, he was appointed as principal of the Lincoln School on College Ave. in Somerville, Massachusetts. He held the position for 3 years, when he transferred to the newly-built Highland School on Highland Ave., in 1880. He served as principal there until his death in 1905.[3]

He married in 1877 to Mary Louise Tourtelllotte.[4] Their first son, Courtland, was born in 1879 in Somerville.[5] By 1900, the couple had 4 children: Cortlandt, Mildred, Robert and James.[6]

George died of chronic Bright's Disease in 1905. He was 59 years old. He is buried at the Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose, Massachusetts.[7]
