John Nichols was born to unknown parents, likely in England, before 1633.[1] By 1653, John had settled in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, which taxed him based on his labor force, assessing him for two tithables, 24 Oct 1653,[2] for one tithable, 6 Feb 1655,[3] for three tithables, 7 Dec 1655,[4] for nine tithables (his labor force being, at this assessment, tied for the county's ninth largest), 5 Nov 1656,[5] for two tithables, 31 Oct 1658,[6] for one tithable, 30 Nov 1659,[7] and for two tithables, 15 Nov 1660.[8]
John executed his will in Lancaster County, 26 Nov 1669.[9] He bequeathed to Sarah Lunsford, daughter of Ann Lunsford, Charles Carpenter, Jr., his son-in-law John Edward's two orphans, and daughters of his sons, Nicholas and John. He named as his executors Stephen Chilton and John Berry, and his will was witnessed by Thomas Shirley and John Flower. John died shortly after executing his will, which was admitted to probate 6 Jan 1770.[10]
