Biography

Peder was born 4 Jul 1613, and was the son of parish priest Nils Pedersen in Valle in Setesdalen, and Sigrid Torkelsdatter.^[1]

He was the parish priest in Hå in Jæren from 1640,^[1][2] and is said to have served as a priest in Setesdalen before that.^[3]

He married Margrete Pedersdatter Trane, the widow of the prior parish priest at Hå, Christen Lauritsen Lind, 7 Mar 1641.^[1][2]

He is recorded as "Petrus Nicolai Sæthersdalensis" in 1648.^[3]

He was last mentioned as living 19 Dec 1654. His successor, Laurits Samuelsen Lind, was first mentioned at the parish in Hå 15 Jun 1655.^[2]

He had no children.^[3]

Research Notes

A portrait in Valle church in Setesdalen was formerly assumed to have been of Esaias Bugge. The portrait has no name, but has a birth date, an ordination date, and a marriage date, all of which are extremely plausible matches for Peder Nilsen in Hå. As he died childless many years before Nils Pedersen did, if Nils was his father he would have inherited Peder's belongings, explaining how a portrait from Jæren could end up in Setesdalen.^[3]
