Sancho was born about 1763. He was enslaved by George Nixon of Loudoun County and freed by his will in 1801. [1] Sancho is described in his freedom certificate as “of dark complexion, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches and ½ high."[2]. A copy of his freedom certificate is in the Loudoun County Loudoun County Free Black Papers.[3] After obtaining his freedom, Sancho moved to Waterford, Virginia, a Quaker village in northern Loudoun County. Sancho bought his wife, wife, Sarah, from Alexander Waugh of Centreville, Virginia. Unable to keep up the payments to James Dawson who loaned him money for his wife's purchase (and a wool hat), he was sued for payment in chancery court. [4]
