Hector was born in 1891[1] in Ingonish, Victoria County, Nova Scotia. He is the son of William Nolan and Margaret McLean. The 1901 Census gives his name as John H. and his birthdate as 25 December 1888. In that year he is living in the household of his parents in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, along with seven siblings. His father is working as a coal miner.[2]
He had been working as a miner when he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Valcartier Quebec in 1915. He served overseas and was discharged in 1919.[3] He became a heavyweight boxer, engaging in 15 bouts between 1921 and 1925.[4] He married Margaret Conroy in Drumheller, Alberta in 1922.[5] He died in Drumheller in 1926.[6][7] Nolan died as a result of a gunshot wound suffered at the hands of a police constable who had arrested him. The polic constanble was later tried for and acquitted of manslaugher.[8]

I am John Patrick Nolan, the grandson of John Hector Nolan and the son of his only child (also John Hector Nolan born on January 3, 1924 in Drumheller Alberta. My grandfather was born on January 6, 1891, not 1890. His father's name was William Nolan of Water Street, Glace Bay NS. I was also born in Drumheller on March 24, 1951. I have two sons Liam Patrick Nolan b. in Ajax Ontario on November 1, 1993 and Brendan Charles Nolan b. in Ajax on June 30, 1998.
