Biography

The daughter of Hiram Bird Northrup (1857-1914) and Allie Samantha Frost (1869-1939), Florence was born in Casco Township in 1885.[1][2] Her siblings included:

Florence moved out of her parents house and found work as a "hired" girl in the household of Wesley Fry, a farmer in Casco Township.[3] On December 26, 1922, she married John Crofoot, who had just returned from working on the railroad in Washington state with his uncle. John was from the local area but had been widowed in 1907. Florence and John married in Breedsville, Michigan.[4] They had one daughter, Mary Ata Crofoot (1923-2012). They set up house in Breedsville, where John worked as a farm laborer.[5] John and Florence divorced in 1937.[6] Florence and Marietta continued to live in Breedsville, while John returned to Clyde Township. In 1940, Florence's widowed aunt, Lillian V. Dunn, age 81, lived in the household with Florence and Marietta; Florence listed her marital status as "widowed" (although John would not die until fourteen years later) and listed her income as "zero.[7] Florence passed away in Douglas Township, in Allegan County, at the age of 77.[8]
