James was a British naval officer who fought with the Imperial Brazil Navy.
He was born about 1789 to James Norton and Elizabeth Rose.
He married Eliza Bland (Smith) Erskine, a widow, in 1819. They had at least 6 children.
He died on a ship off the coast of New Zealand in 1835, on his way back to Brazil.
