He inherited the manor of Read, Lancashire after the death of his brother Thomas Nowell. At the time of the Spanish Armada better-off people were required to end the English government money for the defence of the realm: Roger's loan was set at £25.[1]
Roger was buried at Whalley, Lancashire on 19 May 1591.[2]
"I Roger Nowell of Reade in the Countye of Lanc' Esquier seeke [sick] in body yet of perfect remembrance god be prased, do Institute ordeyne and make this my Last will and testament in maner and forme folowinge, that is to saye first I bequeath my soule &c. and my bodye to be buried in Christian Buryall in the parysshe Churche of Whalley under the throughe stoune [stone] upon the Southe syde of the Church wheras my ffather and my sonne John were buryed. And I will that all my goodes moveable and unmoveable shalbe Devyded into three Equall parts the first parte Whereof I give and bequeath unto fflorance nowe my Wyffe The seconde parte I give &c. unto Alys my doughter, nowe Wyffe unto Willm Shootleworth, and the thirde and Laste parte I geve &c. unto Roger Nowell my sonne and heire apparent and unto Alys my doughter nowe wyffe of Willm Shootleworth to be equallie devyded betwixt theym, all suche goodes as heretofore I have geven unto the saide Roger Nowell my sonne and heire ap't [apparent] by a Dede of gyfte bearinge the date the xxth daye of Aprill in the sex [six] and twentith yeare of the reigne of our moste gratious soveraigne Ladye Elizabeth &c. [1584] beinge forprysed and excepted, Also one Lease wch I had of Alys nowell Late wyffe of Thomas Nowell my brother deceased of her Joynture and Dower, the wch said Lease with the assurance thearof I have geven and assigned unto the said Roger Nowell my sonne and heire appt being Lykewyse forprysed and excepted. And moreover all suche woods and stones as I have gotten and geven unto the said Roger Nowell my Sonne and heir apt [apparent] towarde the buildinge of a Barne being also forprised and excepted. ffynallye I constitute &c. my welbeloved in Christ florance Nowell my Wyffe my sole executrix of this my Last will &c. Also I will and desyre her that everye servante of my howse may have towe [two] shillings. In Wittnes &c. the xxxjth daye of this Instant August 1585. By me Roger Nowell. Sealed &c. theise persons being wytnesses, Edmunde Starkye, John holcar, John Moreton, hugh Wittacir [Whitaker], John+Seller." Proved June 11th, 1591.[3]
