He was commissioned into the Royal Irish Rifles in 1885, transferring in 1886 to the English Rifle Brigade regiment in which he served until 1893. He was later Honorary Colonel of the Clare Royal Field Artillery Reserve Volunteers.
On 14 January 1896, he married, at Richard's Castle, Ethel Jane Foster, the daughter of Johnston J. Foster, of Moor Park near Ludlow, Shropshire, which became his English residence[1].

He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Rifle Brigade.
He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Clare and he held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Shropshire.
He was invested as a Representative Peer [Ireland] between 1900 and 1929.
Upon the death of his father he succeeded to the title of 7th Baronet O'Brien, of Lemeneagh and Dromoland, co. Clare [I., 1686] on 9 April 1900, and he succeeded to the title of 15th Baron of Inchiquin [I., 1543] on the same date.
In 1921 he was appointed to the Senate of Southern Ireland which was abolished next year by the formation of the Irish Free State.
He passed away in 1929 at the age of 65 and was buried at Kilnasoolagh Cemetery, Newmarket on Fergus, County Clare, Ireland[2][3].
