BAY AREA DATELINE - SFGate: Compiled from Examiner staff and wire reports. Published 4:00 am, Thursday, May 20, 1999. Murder suspect arrested in San Francisco. A San Jose man suspected of the brutal stabbing death of his wife was arrested in San Francisco after accosting a 12-year-old child, then threatening the youth's father and neighbors after they came to the child's aid. The arrest of Ismael Zavala Jr. at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday brought to a close the search for the 42-year-old man who was the prime suspect in the slaying of his wife, Erin O'Leary Zavala, 38. Her body was discovered in the couple's Sunol Avenue home Monday morning by Santa Clara County deputies conducting a welfare check requested by family members. Authorities believe a knife with a 9-inch blade recovered at the home was used in her murder. Forensic tests are underway to determine if it is the actual murder weapon.
