James was born on 29 May 1869 at Dromcolliher, Newcastle, County Limerick, Ireland[1]. He was the son of Patrick Shaughnessy (shoemaker) and Mary Fitzgerald.
James O'Shaughnessy migrated from Ireland to New Zealand.
He emigrated to New Zealand some time before 1899.
He married Eleanor Julia Buckeridge on 16 January 1899[2] at Karangahake, near Ohinemuri. They had nine children.
He moved to the township of Karanghake near Ohinemuri where he had a store. The township started in 1885[20], grew rapidly from 1895 because of gold mining, but after 1911 it declined rapidly. During that time James had a few encounters with the law. For example, in 1912 he was charged with "keeping liquor for sale at Karangahake, within the no-license district of Ohinemuri[21]". James defended himself by saying that he drank "an average five gallons of beer each week", and he also "shouted for his mates". As the police had given no evidence of seeing people drinking at the shop, the case was dismissed although the magistrate said that the "circumstances were very suspicious".
In 1913 he was one of those who won a ballot for renewable lease sections described as first-class land at Waitoa, between the Ohinemuri and Piako Counties[22].
By 1919 he had moved to Marton with Julia and was working as a bootmaker, both being on the Rangitikei General Electoral Roll[23]. In 1928 they were living at Broadway, Marton, still being registered on the Rangitikei General Electoral Roll, with two of their sons Patrick[24]and James on the Rangitikei Supplementary Roll. In 1938 they were still living at Broadway[25]. Their son James Junior was with them, and their son Patrick and his wife Rita were living near by.
James died on 24 September 1949 aged 80 years[27]. He was buried in Mount View Cemetery, Marton[28][29] with his wife. The inscription reads:
and JAMES O`SHAUGHNESSY died 24th September 1949 aged 80 years. R.I.P.
Research Notes
James and Julia do not appear to be indexed in the 1925 Electoral Roll although the scan of the original shows their listing. He appears also to be absent from the index for other years including 1908, 1911 and 1914.
So far, no information has been found as to when James first arrived in New Zealand.
