Biography

Charles Oakes was born in 1842 in New Jersey. He is the only known child of Hannah and Daniel P. Oakes . At the time of the 1850 census he was enumerated with his parents in Dennison Township, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He was eight years old and attended school. It is assumed that his mother died sometime between the 1850 and 1858 because in 1860 he was enumerated in Dennison Township with his father, his father's second wife, Mary, and his one year old half brother Richard. Charles is 17 and working as a laborer.
