Frank Harkness Memory - My painter grandfather scared the cat
My grandfather on my mother's side was one half Blackhawk Indian and was quite devilish. Aside from that, he was a very refined gentleman. He was a wallpaper hanger and the best in his trade. He even hung paper in the Hackley house and some of his jobs were by referrals from Charles and Mrs Hackley. When he left for work in the morning, he wore a fine suit & tie, shined shoes and a large shiny briefcase. When he got to work, he would remove his work clothes and lunch from the briefcase and go to work. Neighbors thought he was a banker. On the devilish side one time, he was papering a house and was bothered by a pesky cat. He had a sheet of paper already pasted when the cat jumped up and slid down the whole length of the paper and into the paste bucket. He picked the cat up gently and took a rag soaked in turpentine and held it against the cat's butt. That cat went crazy. After flying around the room a couple times, he went through the door and took about three bounds to get across the living room and out through an open widow, knocking over a pie that was left in the window to cool. The lady ran in and asked what happened to her cat. Granddad said "I really don't know lady, but I think he's allergic to turpentine". The cat came back later, no worse for wear, but he stayed away from Granddad.
