Both Francois and his brother Ignace are praised by the Sulpician missionary and parish priest Flavien Durocher. Concerning a manuscript he had transcribed, Durocher wrote as follows, on January 1, 1834: "I have endeavored to prune all the outdated expressions and to substitute those which are now in use. For this purpose I especially consulted my Nipissing Cicero, Ignace Chawanabe, who, to mention in passing, is a master of the composition of the Algonquin speech in response to the brief of his holiness Gregory xvi, and Francois Odjik, a Nipissing scholar."[3]
