She was born in Stamford, Conn. June 6, 1909, daughter of Gladys Frost Ogden and Herbert Governeur Ogden. Her paternal grandfather, also named Herbert Governeur Ogden, was a founding member of the National Geographic Society. The family lived on Fortland Farm (now a state park) in Stamford until shortly after World War I, when they moved to Switzerland, where she attended a convent, the Hotel Pensionat Bonrivage in Vevey, and later attended the University of Geneva.
She married Fred Otis Newman in Geneva in 1929. They returned to the United States and lived in New York City, then settled in Middletown, N.J. to raise their family. During World War II she was an active volunteer, and then Director of Volunteers, at Long Beach Hospital, and later served as an administrator for the local Ration Board. The Newmans were divorced in 1948.
She and her sister, Dr. Faith Ogden, moved to Sharon in 1965. They were early supporters of Orange County Mental Health (now the Clara Martin Center), and together established the Community Shop in South Royalton, which they operated for many years for the benefit of Orange County Mental Health, later for the South Royalton Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two daughters Elisabeth Ward of Sharon and Nancy Graffis of Ionia, Mich.; one sister, Ann Ogden of East Thetford; six grandchildren: Dr. Jerald Ward of Randolph, Thomas Ward of Sharon, Gwenith Botting of Ionia, Michigan; Dale Graffis of Washington, NJ; Kathleen Keirle of Westminster, Md.; and Lt. Col. Judy Graffis of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. and 12 great-grandchildren including locally, Nathaniel and Rajani Ward of Bethel and Randolph, and Julia Eddy of Sharon. She is also survived by extended family, including Robin Gamble Freeman and Bob Gamble, whose formative years were shaped by her dedication and caring.
She was pre-deceased by one brother, Herbert G. Ogden, former Vermont State Senator from Windsor County; and three sisters: Gladys Ogden Dimock of Bethel, Dr. Faith Ogden, and Elizabeth Ogden.
There are no public calling hours. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 6 at 1 p.m. at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sharon, with the Rev. Timothy C. Eberhardt of St. John's Episcopal Church in Randolph officiating.
