Revolutionary War Pension R7779 Rejected - fold3.com - 32 images - handwriting difficult
Claimant: Susan Oglesby widow of Richard Oglesby of Bedford Co., VA; failed to furnish sufficient proof of service & marriage
There were affidavits written by three of Richard & Susan Oglesby's adult children (Daniel Oglesby & Mrs. Christina Holt of Bedford Co, & Mrs. Conny Witt of Nelson) who had been about ages 12-16 at the time of the Revolution (around 1781). Later other witnesses, Louis B. Reynolds and Elizabeth [Hanley?] were found whose affidavits supported the family's statements and the marriage. None of these affidavits, or the declaration of Mrs. Oglesby, are included in this file. In 1842 the Pension Office in Washington DC refused to send this claim up the line to the War Office or Congress because the first witnesses were such close relatives of Richard & Susan Oglesby (their children), and because they had been so young (10 to 16 years old) at the time of their father's service. These reasons were contested by Mrs. Oglesby's agent Robert H. Gray of Lynchburg, Campbell Co, VA. He also explained that at the time (1842) it was getting more difficult to find contemporary witnesses from militia tours due to deaths & people moving around. Richard had moved from Albemarle Co to Nelson Co and finally Bedford Co. He was known to have said during his lifetime that he was in the Revolutionary War at the times alleged by his family. Mr. Gray also explained that because of her advanced age & that she was of independent circumstances, Mrs. Oglesby didn't want the money for herself but for a granddaughter who needed it. Her children were disinterested for themselves. In Feb 1852 there seemed to be some hope that the papers would be advanced to the House committee, but if so no pension money resulted. [extracted information in narrative form 10 May 2019]
p. 13 - Letter from Pension Department to Mrs. Evelyn Oglesby Page 31 Aug 1932
p. 32 - Letter from Mrs. Evelyn Page 19 Jun 1932 to Pension Department - request for information, mentions Bedford County, Will Book No. 4, page 356 - [implies?] - Will of Daniel Oglesby, who died in 1859 mentions a brother William and a sister Catherine Holt, who died childless, and that they were children of Richard Oglesby, deceased who had a military claim in the hands of Mr. Robert H. Gray, pension agent."

Soon I will be removing Sarah Ferguson & Elizabeth Price Curd as wives of Richard Oglesby d. 1811 and attaching them to Richard Oglesby d.1799 with their children. I have evidence and will present it when I make the changes.

One of these Richard Oglesby's is not the son of Jacob & Constance (Perkins) Oglesby. Still to be determined which. Anyone with any evidence (not old Trees) please drop me a note. ~ Jackie (Savage) Marshall 8 Dec 2019

Oglesby-26 and Oglesby-681 cannot be merged. They are two separate men, but their children and wives are mixed up. I have added their wills and other information for identification of these families. Will learn how to unlink & relink wives & children, then get back to them.
Oglesby-85 and Oglesby-26 are not ready to be merged because: We need to figure out who his parents are before we merge him. Our profiles show different parents.
Oglesby-85 and Oglesby-26 appear to represent the same person because: I found the orphaned Oglesby-85, adopted it, but am sure my ancestor is Oglesby-26, so let's merge.
