John was born 8 February 1908 in Monte, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. . John is the child of Joseph Oliveira aka de Oliveira and Maria Gloria Fernandes.
He was baptized 31 Mar 1908 in Monte, Funchal, Madeira in Nossa Senhora do Monte (Our Lady of the Mountain) Roman Catholic Church. [1]
He came to the U.S. with his parents, stopping briefly at Southampton, England then boarding the USS St. Paul of the American Lines arriving at the port of New York 27 Aug 1911. He lived with his parents first at Cambridge then in Somerville and Charlestown in Massachusetts. He then went to seek his own fortune first in New York City then in Chicago, Illinois. His birth is incorrectly stated on most records as 8 Feb 1906. This was so that he could go to work earlier.
In 1920, John was living in his family's home on Merriam St., Somerville, ward 2, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He was aged 13. [2]
In Chicago, Cook County, Illinois he met his future wife whom he married 18 May 1935 in Chicago. She was Mildred Roseberg, daughter of Max and Anna (Grabert) Rosenberg. She was born 6 December 1907 in Chicago.
John filed petition No. 210488 in U.S. District Court at Chicago for citizenship and took the oath of citizenship on 4 February 1941 and was issued certificate of citizenship no. 5120558. He was described as 5 foot 7 inches in height with brown eyes, black hair and a dark complexion and had a scar behind his right ear. he had originally filed his Declaration of Intention when he was nineteen years of age and living at 48 Walker St., Charlestown (Boston), Massachusetts. He later would serve his new country in the Army during World War II. After the war he made his home in Chicago.
In 1951, he and Mildred were residing at 2745 Kedvale Ave., Chicago, Ill. [3]
Later he made his home in a suburb of Chicago at 8824 south Talman Ave., Evergreen Park, Ill. 60642. There he lived from before 1985 to 1990. in 1990, he and his wife moved to 5032 Stetson ave. West, apt. HT, Stetsonville, WI 54480. [4]
