Maria Oliver was born in 1893 in Walkington, a village in the Yorkshire Wokds two miles west of Beverley the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire; [1]
In 1901 Richard Oliver though again a quarryman, is living in the very centre of Walkington just east of the Dog & Duck Inn. Six children are at home with him and Ann. Only their eldest child Jessie has left school. John 12, Edwin 9 and Maria 7 are at school. Gertrude at 3 is marked as a scholar but is at some kind of child-minder, William at 4 months is probably learning faster than any time in his life. The whole family are marked as born in Walkington, though as we know from 1891 Jessie and John were born in Chalk Villa, [2]
