Biography

Alasco Olmsted, son of Elisha and Harriet (Judson) Olmsted was born in East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut on 17 December 1859.[1] He was named in memorial of a sibling of the same name born in 1850 and died in 1855.

Sometime after the end of the "Civil War" his family moved to Cottondale, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama where his parents operated a mercantile business.[2]

Alasco took to farming just outside of Cottondale.

He married Leoda Addison, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Ayers) Addison on 10 April 1881.[3] They had seven children:

  3. Minerva, b. 1885, d. 1968; m. Samuel Haynie
  4. Albino Thomas, b. 1887, d. 1951; m/1 Virginia Millican; m/2 Ila Hinton; m/3 Lulu Pennington
  5. Harman, b. 1896
  6. William Randolph Hearst, b. 1898, d. 1950; m. Kelly (unknown)
  7. Lacey, b. 1906, d. 1947; m. Stella Chapman

Alasco died in Cottondale on 21 February 1938.[4] He is buried near many family members in the Old Salem Cemetery in Cottondale.[5]

A. Olmsted Dies At Cottondale
Widely Known Resident, Political Leader, To Be Buried Wednesday
Alsaco Olmsted, prominent Tuscaloosa resident and member of the County Democratic Executive Committee, died today at the home of a son at Olmsted Station, 15 miles from Tuscaloosa. He had been in ill health for several months.
Mr. Olmsted was 79 years old, the son of Elisha Sage Olmsted and Harriet Judson Olmsted. Although born in Hartford, Conn., he came to Northport as a child. His father operated a hat factory in Northport for a number of years.
Surviving Mr. Olmsted are his widow, Mrs. Leona Olmsted, three sons, Hearst and Lacey Olmsted of Olmsted Station, and B. Olmsted of Fort Payne, Ala., and two daughters, Mrs. Henay and Mrs. Scales of Birmingham, and one sister, Mrs. F. W. Monnish of Tuscaloosa.
He was widely known in county political circles, serving as Democratic committeeman for Beat 15, Cottondale, for many years. His passing will be widely mourned throughout the county.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 o'clock from Salem Church near Cottondale with interment in the church cemetery. [6]
