Biography

Mate was born about 1500. He was a royal judge of Szászváros , senior official in the salt mines of Transylvania, one of the principal officers of the Salt Chamber (Sókamara) ^[1]. His brother was Nicolaus or Miklos Olah, Archbishop of Esztergom;Bishop of Zagreb. Miklos, his father;his mother; his siblings and their children were given Hungarian enoblement in 1548. Miklos was additonally created Baron in 1558 by King Ferdinand.^[2]His father was Istvan Olah and Borbala Hunszar who married in 1495. His paternal grantparents were Manzilla de Argyesi and Maria/Marina Hunyadi (sister of Janos Hunyadi)^{[3] [4]} Cornelia Popa-Gorjanu, page 322, citing Aurelian Sacerdoteanu (Stema lui Dan al II-lea în legatura cu familiile Huniade ｹi Olah, în RM, 1, 1968, p. 5-16), notes evidence that Manzilla de Argyes may have been the illegitimate son of Vlad Tepes (the impaler). George Lecca (1911) in Table 1a also records Manzilla as the son of Vlad Tepes. ^[5]Ivan Nagy suggests Manzilla possibly descends from the Dán branch of the Bassaraba dynasty.
