Biography
Nettie Mabel was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1871, the daughter of Rufus and Eva (Crowe) Orne. The family moved to neighboring Somerville when she was young, where her father was a brick mason.[1] She attended Somerville schools and graduated from Somerville High School.
In 1889, she was elected as a teacher at the Davis School in Somerville.[2]
She was 35 years old when she married Frederick Humiston, a native of New York, in 1896.[3] The couple resided in Somerville.[4][5] Frederick died in 1918.
After her husband's death, Nettie returned to teaching, this time at the Cutler School in Somerville, teaching 2nd and 3rd grades. At the time of the 1920 census, Nettie and her two daughters (Dorris, age 22, and Eleanor, 13) lived with her parents in Somerville. Nettie and her sister Marion both were employed as school teachers.[6] She retired in 1941, after 21 years at the Cutler.[7]
Nettie died in 1952. She is buried at the Conant Cemetery in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, with her husband.[8]
