George was the youngest child of Gottfried and Clara Orwig.
He enlisted in July 1776 in the Rifle Company commanded by Capt. James Olds, served for 5 months, fought in the battle of Long Island, and at White Plains. Then he served as a substitute for Philip Shots for 2 months starting in Aug. 1777, under Capt. Jacob Whetstone, fighting in the Battle of the Brandywine. In the winter of 1778 he enlisted as a substitute for his brother Henry, and served at Plymouth Meeting, near Philadelphia, for 1 month; later in March and April he served at White March under Col. Lindamute and Lt. Col. George May. In Sept. 1778 he served for 2 months at Ft. Jenkins.
He married Maria Magdalena Gilbert (10 Aug 1758-30 Jan 1841), daughter of Conrad Gilbert, in 1779. They had 12 children:
He relocated from Berks co. to Union Co. around 1812 and settled near Mifflinburg.
Wagenseller notes on pp 185-186 that the Gilbert family George married into, may have had a Hornetter connection; the Hornetter/Honnetter family provided the mother of all the Wagensellers in America, but the author was unable to prove the connection at that time.
