Biography

Ignace (also given Ignos, Ignatz) was born in 1871 in Trnava, Slovakia (then part of Austria-Hungary).

He married Catharine "Katie" Dostich (1874-1950). They had at least 4 children:

Mary/Mere Osust 1895-1948 (m. Imre Orth 1915)^[1]

Ignace/Ignos/Ignatz/Ignatius Stephen Osust 1895-1976

Anna Osust 1904- (m. Frank Baranek 1924^[2]

Catherine "Katie" Osust Smith 1908-2010

They emigrated to the United States, about 1912, settling in Middletown, Ohio.

The 1920 census shows Ignatz Osust Sr., 49, place of birth Czech-Slovak, mother tongue Slovak. Year of immigration 1908. Alien. Retail merchant-grocer. With him were Mary his wife (49, year of immigration 1912); Annie, daughter (16, year of immigration 1913, did not attend school, saleslady, grocery (meat); Katie, daughter (16, year of immigration 1912, did attend school, no occupation (but saleslady grocery was crossed out)). On the next line in a separate entry is Ignatz Osust Jr., 24, married, (year of immigration 1908, steel worker at rolling mill); married to Josefina 19 (year of immigration 1914, no occupation), and Joseph Stefunka 37, (year of immigration 1902, steel worker, boarder).

1930 Census; Middletown, Butler, OH:

Ignaz Osusth 59, married since age 22, home owned, Czechoslovakia (and parents), Slovak birth language, immigration year 1910, alien, able to read and write but not in English, not employed.

Katherine Osusth, 55, married since age 19, Czechoslovakia (and parents), Slovak, immigrated 1912, not able to read or write, or speak English, not employed.

Katherine Osusth, 21, daughter, single, able to read/write, Czechoslovakia, Slovak, immigrated 1912, Pl for immigration status, can speak English, wrapper in a tobacco factory.

(next entry is Henry and Mary Orth (30), also immigrants, and their 5 children, all born in OH. Mary is believed to be their daughter, immigrated in 1913 and was married since age 16 -- her birth date should be about 1900 rather than 1895 if that is correct)

In 1950 Ignatz was 79, Catherine was 78, both were naturalized citizens and were not working.

He passed away in 1952. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Research Notes

Probably wife's name is Mary Catherine or Catherine Mary and she used Mary in 1920. Other census records need finding. Two different FS profiles believed to represent the same family, need more investigation. Ancestry may have 1930-1940 census records.
