Ouatsen or Houatsen is a phonetic rendering of Watson in French. In his first marriage record his father's last name, Watson is omitted but given as his mother's name, he likely didn't know/remember his mother's maiden name since the English did not maintain their maiden name as the French did. I believe the text should be interpreted as: son of John Robert and Anne WATSON as opposed to John ROBERT and Anne WATSON. At his second marriage the correct name for his father, John Robert Watson is given but the word following his mother's name Anne is interpreted as Stsemenne, I read it as Hesemenrie, neither of which make any sense.
Joseph Watson was the son of Robert Watson and his wife Hannah (Beard) Watson. His father was killed in the Indian raid where he and his mother were abducted. His mother was ransomed without her son (Which seems odd to me, was she bought rather than ransomed and the man who bought her did not want to pay for her son who was another man's child?). Joseph Watson was taken to Canada and remained in captivity until the age of 17.[1]
He is said to be 17 at his baptism in April 1697 which would give a YOB of about 1680.[2]
