Biography

Claude was the youngest graduate of Anamosa Iowa High School, finishing June 12, 1896 (two months before his 16th birthday). He spent two years at Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, Massachusetts to prepare for entering Harvard University. He earned a B.A. there in 1903, having stayed out one year to tutor John R Tunis and his older brother. He did free-lance writing most of his life, spending many years in Europe (mostly France). When the Nazis took Paris, he, and two other Americans ( a physician and a woman writer) made a spectacular escape via Spain and Portugal to New York City.

In 1942 he moved to Denver, Colorado with his older sister and was hired by radio station KLZ to broadcast about his knowledge of Europe.

According to family lore, the woman writer was also his mistress. They were given save passage from France into Spain and Portugal because the Nazi official in charge was a former classmate at Harvard. He knew Claude Outland because Claud had been his tutor while at Harvard. (From Biography on LDS Family Search.)
