Biography

Amelia's date of birth is estimated from her date of marriage and the age range of the adult woman in her husband's household in the 1820 and 1830 United States census.^[1][2]

She married Joseph Spruill Tarkington on 6 June 1818 in Williamson County, Tennessee.^[3] They had a son, Thomas,^[4] and a daughter who died in infancy.^[5] Although her husband Joseph claimed in his Southern Claims Commission application that he had only two children,^[6] he and Amelia were probably also the parents of another son, Joseph.^[7] The younger Joseph had been in the Confederate army, which could have hurt the elder Joseph's chance of having his claim approved.
