Amelia's date of birth is estimated from her date of marriage and the age range of the adult woman in her husband's household in the 1820 and 1830 United States census.[1][2]
She married Joseph Spruill Tarkington on 6 June 1818 in Williamson County, Tennessee.[3] They had a son, Thomas,[4] and a daughter who died in infancy.[5] Although her husband Joseph claimed in his Southern Claims Commission application that he had only two children,[6] he and Amelia were probably also the parents of another son, Joseph.[7] The younger Joseph had been in the Confederate army, which could have hurt the elder Joseph's chance of having his claim approved.
