He was an amatuer boxer and wrestler, competing in Wirth's Olympia, Melbourne, Victoria in 1922.
In 1928 Norman travelled by ship via Hong Kong to Canada, having already spent time in Borneo as a Lumber Man.
Norman married Marjorie Rosina Minchin (daughter of Francis John Corker Minchin and Florence Carpenter) on 13 February 1932 in Punt Road Presbyterian Church, South Yarra, Victoria.
He had three daughters.
In January 1939 he was part owner in a sawmill at Narbethong.
He served with the Royal Australian Air Force in the 2nd World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (D.F.M.).[1]
Norman passed away in 1952 at the age of 49, after a burning tree fell on him while he was clearing a runway for his plane to land on his property.
