Biography

Thomas Richard Palmer was born 25 Aug 1829 in Aylesford, Kings Co., NS, a twin to his sister Sarah.

Thomas Palmer and Margaret Ann Nichols took out a marriage bond on 1 Jul 1848. They married 17 Jul 1850 in Kentville.. She was born 8 Sep 1832, in Aylesford, daughter of George Nichols and died 26 Dec 1909, Rockland, Kings Co., N.S., aged 77 years.

Thomas was a farmer in Rockland. In 1851, Thomas was living in Aylesford with a family consisting of 1 male 20-30 [himself] and 1 female 20-30 [Margaret, his wife]. E. M. L. Palmer was residing close by.

In 1861, Thomas A. [sic] was residing in Berwick with a family consisting of 1 male under 1 [Lathum], 1 female 1-2 [Elizabeth], 3 males 5-10 [George, Ambrose, Charles L.], 1 female 5-10 [Minetta L.], 1 female 10-15 [Mary E.], 1 married female [Margaret, his wife] and 1 married male 30-40 [himself].

In 1871, Thomas and Margaret were living in Berwick with their 9 youngest, surviving children.

In 1881, Thomas, 51, farmer and Margaret, 48 were living in Berwick with George, 28, Ambrouse [sic], 26, Charles, 24, Emma, 18, Isaiah, 16, Hanley [sic], 14, Thomas, 12, Charlotte, 9 and Robert, 7 in Berwick.

In 1891, Margaret, 60, widow, was the head of the family for Handly, 25, Martha, 25, Thomas, 22 and Robert, 17 in Berwick.

In 1901, Thomas and Margaret were living with their son and daughter-in-law, Hanly and Martha in Berwick.

He died 22 Mar 1908 and is buried in the Berwick Cemetery.

  1. Mary Eliza, b. 20 Oct 1850 in Nicholsville, m. 4 Jan 1868, Edmund Chute Palmer, s/o Benjamin Palmer.
  2. Minetta L., b. 17 Jan 1852 in Nicholsvillem. Foster Benjamin Parish 10 Feb 1869 in Cornwallis, son of Joel Parish and Olivia Chute, d. 16 Apr 1922 in Waterville.
  3. George, b. 22 Nov 1853 in Shubenacadie, Hants Co., d. 26 Sep 1924 in Berwick. He married (1) Margaret McKinnon 13 Oct 1884. She died 20 Jun 1902 . He married (2) Sophia Lavinia Patterson 1 Feb 1905, daughter of Samuel Patterson and Sarah J. Goucher. Occupation – lumberman.
  4. Ambrose, b. 5 Mar 1855 in Shubenacadie, Hants Co.,d. 6 Sep 1914 in South Berwick. He married Sarah J. Chute 25 Feb 1882 in Lowell, Middlesex Co., Mass., daughter of Leander Chute and Margaret E. Rainforth. In 1871, Ambrose, 16, Lathron, 10 and Emma, 8 were living with Handly Parker, 57 and his wife Mary, 58 in Aylesford. Sarah was a school teacher. Both bur. Berwick Cemetery.
  5. Charles L., b. 4 Jan 1858 in Rockland, Kings Co., d. 24 Sep 1928 in Berwick. He married Anne L. Mapplebeck 22 Nov 1899 in Aylesford, bur. Berwick Cemetery.
  6. Elizabeth, b. 25 Apr 1859 in Windermere, d. 12 Jun 1878, age 19.
  7. Lathum, b. 8 Dec 1860 in Windermere, d. 25 Sep 1876 of TB in Berwick, age 15.
  8. Emma, b. 15 Aug 1862 in Windermere, d. 4 Jul 1932 in Rockland. She m(1) Frederick Webb, m(2) T. E. Fogarty, Oct 1908, bur. Berwick Cemetery.
  9. Isaiah, b. 11 Apr 1864 in Rockland, d. 2 Nov 1929 in Farmingdale, Mass. He married Victoria Rebecca Sanford, 25 Oct 1886, carpenter res. Somerville, Mass. in 1900, Melrose, Mass. in 1920, bur. Berwick Cemetery.
  10. Handley B., b. 23 Feb 1866 in Rockland, d. 11 Dec 1918 in Kentville, bur. Berwick. He married Martha Elizabeth Sanford 20 Mar 1889.
  11. Thomas, b. 13 Aug 1868 in Berwick. He married (1) Bessie L. Mapplebeck 11 Mar 1897 in Melvern Square, Annapolis Co., NS, daughter of George Mapplebeck and Frances McKinley. She died 19 Mar 1902. He married (2) Edna Veinot 19 Nov 1902. Thomas d. 24 Dec 1945, Edna d. 31 Oct 1968, both bur. Berwick Cemetery.
  12. Charlotte, b. 6 Jan 1872 in Rockland, m. 5 Feb 1889, Lysander Thomas, d. 15 Jun 1952.
  13. Robert Bordman, b. 15 Dec 1875 in Rockland, m. 1 Sep 1897, Ermina Anna Rainforth, d. 14 Jul 1936 in Weston.
