Biography

As a young man in 1859 he moved from home to Fitchville, Ohio.

He first enlisted for service in the civil war on June 29, 1861, in Company D of the 8th Ohio infantry. He saw action at Worthington, Virginia, Romney, West Virginia and Wire Bridge, Virginia and was discharged due to disability on January 3, 1862.

He then enlisted in E company of the 123rd Ohio infantry on August 22, 1862. His unit was assigned to western Virginia where he spent the first winter out of harm's way. In the spring of 1863 he participated in the engagement against Gen. Early at Winchester, in which his regiment lost in killed and wounded nearly 100 men, and the following day the entire regiment, with the exception of Co. D, became prisoners of war as a result of the surrender of the whole brigade. According to his grandson, Schuyler Palmer, Lucius spent time in the civil war in the infamous Andersonville prison of war camp. The following September he and his company were exchanged. He later saw action at New Market, Piedmont and Lynchburg. Near the end of the war, in April 1865, as the Union army was closing in on Lee's army, his unit was captured again, this time by the Confederate cavalry at Farmville, Virginia. In 1900 he was living in Kenton, Ohio. His widow filed a pension application, from California, in February 1916.

After the war, he travelled about the country before settling in Norwalk, Ohio. He stayed for 36 years before moving west, to Los Angeles in 1915 to live with his son Howard. - Norwalk (OH) Reflector, January 11, 1916
