James was born about 1780 in Gates County, North Carolina.
James Parker lived in that part of Gates County known as the Dismal Swamp. He moved to Smith Co TN after 1818. Deeds in Smith County show him as a early settler of Smith County. The majority of first settlers of Smith County, Tennessee were from North Carolina and also not a few were from Virginia. Those from North Carolina were only moving from one part to another of the same state. As early as 1777, in order to encourage immigrants, North Carolina passed an act giving each head of household 640 acres and 100 acres to his wife, and the same to each child. In May 1780 another act gave large land bounties to the officers and solders enlisted in what is now known as the North Carolina Continental Line. A deed from James C. and Richard Parker in 1854 describes the same land owned by James Parker.
