Philena Alma was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1883, the daughter of Jesse and Philena (Moxley) Parker.[1] She was the second of three children, all daughters. She grew up in Lowell, attending local schools.[2] She graduated from Lowell High School in 1902.[3]
She was a teacher at the Centre School in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, in 1903-1904. [4] At the time of the 1910 census, she and her mother, now a widow, lived in Chelmsford, where Philena was described as a grammar school teacher.[5]
She was hired as a 7th grade teacher at the Forster School in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1908, where she worked until at least 1910. She was a resident of Arlington, Mass., at the time.[6] In 1914-1915, she was attending training courses for teachers at the Boston University.[7]
In 1917, she married James L. Bartlett, son of Moses and Harriet (Morse) Bartlett. He was a florist of Sudbury, Mass.; she was a teacher from Boston.[8] The couple lived in Sudbury, where they raised 5 children.[9]
Philena died in 1974 in Marlborough, Mass.[10] She is buried at the Long Hill Cemetery in Salisbury, Massachusetts, with her husband, who predeceased her.[11]
