Mary Candis was found hanged in the smoke house. No one ever knew whether it was murder or suicide. This occurred after the birth of Eloqueen in 1853 and Robert's second marriage on June 21, 1855.
After the death of Mary Candis, Josephine and Henry lived with their maternal grandparents, Gabriel and Martha PARKS. These children are shown living with the PARKS in the 1860 Census of Monroe County. Eloqueen lived with Robert's parents, Jonathan and Elizabeth RICHARDSON. She is shown with them in the 1860 Census of Upson County.
Gabriel PARKS deeded several slaves to his grandchildren Josephine, Henry and Eloqueen RICHARDSON in care of Robert N. RICHARDSON on November 4, 1853. (Recorded Book G., Page 724, Monroe county Deeds).
