Warren Parrish was a leader in the early Latter Day Saint movement.
Warren was born in 1803. He was the son of John Parrish and Ruth Farr.
Around 1823 he married Elizabeth Patten, a sister to David Patten, a leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
They had one daughter, Mary, born about 1825.
They lived in Jefferson County, New York. [1]
In 1833 he was baptized by Brigham Young into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
He traveled on missionary journeys in Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky with his brother-in-law David. He participated in the Camp of Zion in 1834. His wife Elizabeth died of cholera there at Rush Creek, Missouri in 1834.
From 1835-1837 Parrish served as secretary to Joseph Smith. He was appointed member of First Quorum of the Seventy in 1835.
He married Martha Raymond in Ohio in 1835. [2]
They had one daughter, Martha (Roberts), 1837–1900.
In 1836 he was appointed treasurer of the Kirtland Safety Society, a banking system for members of the church. A few months later he was accused of embezzling and counterfeiting.
In 1837 he led a group of dissenters away from Smith and formed a new church. When that dissolved he left for Wisconsin and Illinois and became a Baptist minister. Smith relates the words of Heber C. Kimball upon an encounter he had with Warren Parrish at Fox River in 1844:
"He was a grave-looking man-a straight-jacketed fellow, dressed in black, with a white handkerchief around his neck. Says he, 'Elder Kimball, will you have the goodness not to say to the people here that I ever was a Mormon. I am a Baptist minister. I am preaching at that meetinghouse for a salary of $500 a year. If they find out I have been a Mormon, it would hurt my influence very much indeed.'[3]
In 1850 he was a clergyman in Mendon, New York. [4]
In 1854 he and his nephew Thomas Carrico came to Rockford, Illinois where he was called as pastor to First Baptist Church. [5][6][7]
In 1866 they moved to Emporia, Kansas. He is listed as insane in the 1870 Census. [8]
Warren passed away in 1877.
