William was born about 1861 in Eastrington, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, William and Hannah,[1] in 1871.[2]
At the time of the 1881 census he worked as a farm servant and boarded with the Kinsley family in Wressle, Yorkshire.[3] In 1891 he worked as a "chalk pitter" and lived at 2 Hales Terrace, Hull, Yorkshire, with Sarah Ann Wilson – his married "housekeeper" – and their baby daughter, Ethel Maud.[4]
By 1901 William was a widower (though he did not seem to have married Sarah) and lived with his daughter and son in Eastrington, where he worked as a gardener.[5] They had moved to Bishopsoil, Yorkshire, by 1911, and William worked as a farm labourer.[6]
