Biography
John Paterson was born in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England.
John Paterson, son of Prideaux Paterson (1782-bef.1851) and Elizabeth (Smeaton) Patterson (abt.1783-1857), was born in Greenses Haven, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England and was baptised on 28 April 1819 at Holy Trinity, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England.[1][2]
John Patterson and Jane White were married in 1839 in Tynemouth.[3] Children from this marriage were:
- Isabella Patterson (1840-)[4]
- Elizabeth Patterson (1843-)[5]
- Margaret Patterson (1846-)[6]
- Jane Patterson (1849-)[7]
- Catherine Patterson (1853-)[8]
In 1841, John, his wife Jane and daughter Isabella were at Middle Street, Spittle, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, where John was a Fisherman.[9] The 1871 census identified their daughter Isabella as an "Imbecile" and the 1881 census as an "Imbecile from birth". In 1851, John, a Fisherman (white) was still in Middle Street with his wife Jane and four daughters.[10] By 1861 the family had moved to Front Street, Spittal, Berwick[11] where they remained until after 1871.[12] By 1881, John, Jane and two of their daughters, Isabella and Jane, had moved to 28 Main Street, Berwick on Tweed, Tweedmouth.[13] With them were the unmarried Jane's two children, Jane Isabella and John Patterson.
John Patterson died in 1887 at age 67 in Berwick, Northumberland, England.[14]
Research Notes
John's wife Jane was the daughter of Thomas White and Isabella Smith. Her marriage was registered under "Jane Smith".[15] The children's births were all registered under "Jane White".
