Winifred Joyce Paterson was born on 29 April 1914 in Patea, Taranaki, her father, John, was 39, and her mother, Gertude Davidson, was 32. She married George Hayward Kettles on 20 June 1939 in Wellington, New Zealand. They had three children during their marriage. She died on 14 September 2006 in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, at the age of 92, and was buried in Waikato.
